utilitarian-clay Conference September 9-12 2020
I am so honored to be one of sixteen presenters this year at the Utilitarian Clay Conference in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts will host the eighth Utilitarian Clay VIII Symposium from September 9-12, 2020. Held every four years since 1992, Arrowmont’s Utilitarian Clay Symposium enjoys a national reputation within the ceramics community. Celebrating and appreciating the limitless interpretations of the utilitarian clay object, the Symposium attracts those who are interested in the practical concerns with making functional objects and the more theoretical issues related to the field. Two Week Hands on Workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts
Soda Salt Surface
Developing surfaces on utilitarian forms for the soda/salt firing process is the focus of this workshop. Wheel thrown altered forms will be shaped slowly with an emphasis on tight fitting lids and fine craftsmanship. We will build layers on the surface of our pots and create a range of textures and patterns for the slips and glazes to highlight. In this workshop we will use porcelain and stoneware clays and fire to cone 9/10. All levels welcome.
